Function
Serum albumin examination assesses albumin level in the blood. Albumin is a type of protein produced by the liver. Albumin functions to maintain fluid balance in blood vessels and acts as a carrier of various important substances in the body, such as hormones, vitamins, and enzymes. Low albumin levels can occur in conditions of disorders of the liver or kidneys, malnutrition, infections, or disorders of the thyroid gland.
