Function
This test measures levels of DHEA sulfate (DHEA-S), a type of male hormone found in both men and women in the blood. DHEAS plays an important role in the production of the hormones testosterone and estrogen. This hormone also plays a role in the formation of male sexual characteristics at puberty. This examination can be useful in determining the cause of disorders of the adrenal glands, adrenal tumors, testicular and ovarian disorders, causes of premature puberty in men, and causes of excess hair growth and masculinization in women.
